Pretzel Buns

Pretzel Buns

Pretzels. One of people’s favorite things to snack on, whether it be from a little dish at a pub or from a bag at home. These salty snacks beat those salty cravings you have at all times of the day (or night!).

Have you ever taken it to the next level and made a pretzel bun? You can eat them toasted, warmed, plain, with mustard, or pile sandwich ingredients inside them.

Let me help you take your pretzel game to the next level!

INGREDIENTS:

*1 cup warm water (about 100 degrees F)

*2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast

*1 tsp sugar

*3 cups all purpose flour

*1 tbs olive oil

*1 tsp salt

*2 tbs baking soda

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Combine water, yeast, and sugar in a bowl (or I use my glass measuring cup). Whisk together, then cover and let sit for at least 5 minutes.

  2. In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine flour, olive oil, and salt.

  3. Once the yeast mixture has formed a nice bubbly, foamy layer, pour it into your dry ingredients in the large bowl.

  4. With a dough hook or kneading with your hands, mix ingredients well until a nice dough forms.

  5. Remove dough from bowl, spray bowl with cooking oil, put the dough back in, cover and let sit in a warm place for about an hour or until dough ball doubles in size.

  6. Once dough has doubled in size, dump it out on a lightly floured surface. Punch the dough down to remove any air bubbles.

  7. Boil 5 cups of water and baking soda in a large pot.

  8. Cut the dough into pieces about the size of 1/3 cup. Form into balls and set aside.

  9. Preheat oven to 450 F

  10. Once the water/baking soda is boiling, place 2-3 dough balls in and let sit for 25 seconds. Don’t let them sit longer or they will get a metallic taste. Remove them from the water with a slatted spoon, place on a baking sheet, and cut a shallow x in the top with a sharp knife. Repeat until all the dough balls are done.

  11. Brush them with the melted vegan butter, sprinkle some coarse salt on each one and place in the oven. Let bake for 18-20 minutes.

  12. Enjoy!

You can even use this recipe to make pretzel bites! Just cut the dough into 1” pieces instead of rolling into balls. Do all the same steps, and voila! You have pretzel bites!

Keep cooking, friends!
